No Disqualifications: The Loss of a Canadian Legend

Hey there all my hoochies, hotties and heaux. Miz Angell here with a special edition of No Disqualifications. I had every intention of writing a column ripping the WWE for the bizarre new storyline of the demise of Vince McMahon, and the lack of respect they showed the passing of legendary women's wrestler and valet extraordinaire, "Sensational" Sheri Martel.

But then I got the news yesterday.

Chris Benoit. Canadian wrestler. Icon. Legend. Gone.

I felt sick. I didn't know what to say. At the time I was told, cause of death hadn't been revealed, and I prayed that it was a home invasion gone wrong. I didn't want to believe what was floating around in the back of my mind. I respected this man for years - I couldn't even fathom that he would do something so heinous.

But he did. And he's left it for us as the last memory of him. I'm angry. I'm hurt. I'm disappointed. This will be as much a part of his legacy as his legendary career, and it's not something we want to remember.

But we will.

So I, like all other sports entertainment enthusiasts and sports writers (sorry to those who think I don't deserve the title), am left with a dilemma today. Do I celebrate the life and IN-RING career of one of the best that Canada had produced in our history, or do I write a scathing social commentary on the sin of murder and suicide, and ignore everything he meant to the industry, to his friends, and to us, the fans.

I remember the last time I saw Benoit wrestle live. The WWE was in Toronto a few weeks ago, and the audience was treated to a taping of Saturday Night's Main Event. Benoit was teaming with Batista against MVP & Edge. It was a hell of a match with the audience going crazy whenever Edge or Benoit was in the ring. He was in fine form. I just sat back in awe, as not even my amazing seats at Wrestlemania afforded me the view I had at this event. It was poetry in motion to watch as Benoit went up to the top rope, and thousands of cameras flashed as he flew and landed his patented lethal head butt for the win. I wish I had realized that it would be the last time I would have that opportunity. I might have gone against the rules and taken pictures. I might have enjoyed it just a little more. I might have watched him on the apron instead of the action in the ring. I would have clapped a little harder, cheered a little louder. As a fan, I have to ask - did he know he was appreciated? Did he KNOW he was a legend? Did he know how much we loved and admired him?

That, we'll never know.

I could parrot the other sites, who have put up his career stats, his accomplishments, and his life as a whole. But anyone can write those up - all you need to do is research.

I've decided I'm going to let my readers have their say. What is YOUR favourite memory of the Canadian Crippler? How long were you a fan? Did you ever get to meet him? This is a call to arms people. For a moment, albeit a brief one, forget how he ended. Let's remember the man for how he began, for how he lived. Send me your stories, your memories.

Maybe then, we can find some solace, some comfort, in this horrific tragedy. We can never hope to make sense of it. I doubt those closest to him knew he was in pain. I doubt they read this column, but if they do, there was nothing you could do. If he wanted help, he had to ask. No one's a mind reader. You couldn't have known.

So, as my final words today, I am sending my condolences and love to his family and friends in this tragic time. I hope the souls of Nancy and Daniel can rest in peace. And I hope that Chris found his peace at last, wherever his soul may be.

Until next week......

R.I.P. Chris Benoit

Chris Benoit: 1967 - 2007

I don't have the heart to type the details. Here's the news story.

WWE wrestler Chris Benoit and family found dead

Renowned pro wrestler Chris Benoit, his wife and their 7-year-old-son, were found dead Monday afternoon in their Fayetville, Ga. home, Atlanta police said.

Details of the deaths "are going to prove a little bizarre" when released to the public, Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Autopsies were scheduled Tuesday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in DeKalb County, according to the Associated Press.

Investigators believe Benoit, 40, killed his wife Nancy and son Daniel over the weekend, and then himself sometime Monday.

The three bodies were found in different rooms of the home, according to reports.

The news came just a day after Benoit mysteriously pulled out of a World Wrestling Entertainment pay per view event, during which he was expected to be crowned Extreme Championship Wrestling world champion. Various pro wrestling news sources reported that Benoit was unable to appear at the event due to a family emergency.

"There are no further details at this time, other than the Benoit family residence is currently being investigated by local authorities," the WWE said in a statement on its Web site.

Ballard said a gun was not used in any of the deaths. But he declined to say how the three died.

"We're pretty sure we know, but we want to confirm it with the crime lab," Ballard said early Tuesday.

Benoit was a 22-year ring veteran and perennial favorite of wrestling purists, who praised his high-intensity style and technical acumen. His aggressive wrestling technique earned him the nicknames "The Crippler" and "The Rabid Wolverine." In 2000 and 2004, he was named Oustanding Wrestler of the Year by the Wrestling Observer newsletter and in 2004 he was named Wrestler of the Year by Pro Wrestling Illustrated magazine.

The Edmonton, Canada native trained to become a wrestler in Calgary, and honed his skills in Japan before becoming a regular on U.S. national promotions in the mid-1990s. Benoit's career highlight took place in New York, when he won his first World Wrestling Entertainment world heavyweight championship in Madison Square Garden in the main event of WrestleMania XX.

Benoit cried as he celebrated in the ring with his wife and son, as well as best friend, wrestler Eddie Guerrero, who died in 2005.

"Wrestling has consumed my life," Benoit said in a 2004 WWE career retrospective video. "Wrestling is my mistress. It's my passion. It defines who I am as a person."

WWE Monday night canceled its scheduled live 3-hour "Monday Night RAW" program, which coincidentally was originally billed as a "memorial service" for WWE chairman Vince McMahon, whose character was recently killed off in a controversial scripted storyline.

McMahon opened the show from center ring in an empty arena and clarified that Benoit and his family had died "in reality." McMahon called Benoit "one of the greatest WWE superstars of all-time."

Lost...

Today isn't any better. How do you accept the fact that someone you knew willingly took his life - willingly caused those who loved him pain and heartache? Especially when you know so many who have died that didn't have a choice?

I'm so mad at him - FRANK I'M MAD AT YOU, YOU ASSHOLE!

It doesn't matter that I haven't seen you in a year - it doesn't matter that we lost touch. YOU WENT AND LEFT US. Why?????

I wanna know why someone so young, dynamic, good looking, smart and talented was too stoopid to figure out how to call a shrink?????

But mostly I want to know why he thought this was the only way out. No note was found - it even took a few days for them to find the body. (Edited to add: A note was found, but hadn't been read as of last night - and it wasn't a few days - he had been dead a month before he was found).

He was in the service at one point. It was his service revolver that did the deed.

I'll never have the answers. None of us will.

I wish I could find the audio code for this song, but I can't. One of my favourites, I dedicate it not just to Frank, but to all those we've ever lost.

Just Once More

(Matthew & Gunnar Nelson)

I've got a million pictures in my heart and here at home
But I'm afraid that they'll just fade with time
And photographs are cold
And a memory's hard to hold
And I never got the chance to say goodbye

One more day-one more night
One more chance to get it right
A few more words-a few more laughs
Doesn't seem too much to ask
And I know it's just a dream
But I'd give everything
If you'd walk through that door just once more

Sometimes I catch myself asking you out loud
What you'd do if you were in my place
'Cause every day in every way
I've tried to make you proud
I wish that I could tell you face to face

One more day-one more night
One more chance to get it right
A few more words-a few more laughs
Doesn't seem too much to ask
And I know it's just a dream
But I'd give everything
If you'd walk through that door just once more

Seasons come and seasons go
But love lives on-you taught me so
Oh-I've been blessed, I don't think twice
But wouldn't it be nice

One more day-one more night
One more chance to get it right
A few more words-a few more laughs
Doesn't seem too much to ask
And I know it's just a dream
But I'd give everything
If you'd walk through that door just once more

I love you Frank - I'll miss you soldier boy.
